“The Veiled History,” Mehran Mohajer’s “The Present Past”

A review of Mehran Mohajer’s exhibition The Present Past at ag Galerie by Alireza Saei.
In The Present Past, Mehran Mohajer presents Iran’s ancient monuments through an altered visual perspective. In many of the photographs, indistinct objects partially obstruct the viewer’s field of vision, shifting attention away from the monument itself. Rather than documenting historical sites, Mohajer questions how history is accessed and perceived, foregrounding absence, distance, and the inaccessibility of the past.
Mehran Mohajer was born in 1964 and received a BA in Photography and an MA in Linguistics from the University of Tehran. He teaches Photography and Criticism at the University of Tehran and has translated several key texts on photography. Mohajer has held more than twenty solo exhibitions in Iran and internationally. His well-known series include Migrant Packages, Camera Rosea, and Tehran Undated, published in his book Tehran, Undated/Displaced.
