Spring of recession

Reza Aramesh and Sohrab Kashani speak about their collaboration on Centrefold Issue 9 and Spring of Recession, the exhibition curated at Sazmanab. The conversation is moderated by Ali Bakhtiari.
Centrefold, a project by Reza Aramesh, is a collaborative publication in scrapbook format produced as a limited edition of no more than forty-one copies. Initiated in 2003 through the curatorial project Wooden Hearts, Centrefold operates as a low-tech cut-and-paste publication in which artists work directly on the page. In each issue, artists are invited to treat one or two pages as their own scrapbook, while a writer, curator, or artist is typically invited to produce the centrefold section. All pages are compiled, formatted, and designed by Reza Aramesh or in collaboration with a guest artist.
Centrefold proposes a non-linear approach to recording art history, foregrounding the artist’s perspective rather than conventional art-historical documentation. Editions of the publication are held in major public institutions and private collections, including Tate, the Zabludowicz Collection, A Foundation, and the Philip Aarons Collection.
Centrefold: Spring of Recession is the ninth issue of the publication, developed in collaboration with Sohrab Kashani of Sazmanab and featuring works by twenty-seven Iranian artists.
Centrefold: Spring of Recession – The Exhibition presents a selection of editions produced for the ninth issue alongside individual works by the contributors. Curated by Reza Aramesh and Sohrab Kashani, the exhibition adopts the sensibility of a scrapbook, extending the logic of the publication into the exhibition space.
