Some Links, Some Projections

Anahita Razmi
Sazmanab

Sazmanab-Ab/Anbar presents the exhibition Some Links, Some Projections by Berlin-based artist Anahita Razmi.

Some Links, Some Projections brings together new works by Anahita Razmi, most of which are conceived for this occasion. Addressing shifting relationships between specific locations in times of globalisation, the exhibition’s seemingly random links and projections are anchored through site-specific installations at Sazmanab-Ab/Anbar.

A Tale of Tehrangeles (2013) takes the opening of Charles Dickens’ novel A Tale of Two Cities as the basis for a visual collage of Tehran and Los Angeles. Following presentations in Los Angeles at the MAK Center in 2013 and in Europe at abc Berlin in 2013 and Kunstraum Riehen in 2014, the presentation in Tehran completes the work’s trajectory through locations central to its narrative. The video work Anahita Razmi Promo (2014) refers to American artist Chris Burden’s Chris Burden Promo, shifting its original concept into an Iranian media context. The original clip, broadcast in 1976 during advertising segments on US television channels, listed the names of well-known artists in bold graphics, concluding with “Burden” and the disclaimer “Paid for by Chris Burden – artist”.

The third installation, Wall Links, Floor Links (2014), materialises stock photography within the exhibition space. Rather than presenting a linear narrative, the installation proposes a set of inquiries, exploring relationships between location and media, generated images, representational equations, and visual memory.

Anahita Razmi is a visual artist based in Berlin, working primarily with video, installation, new media, and performance. Her practice reconsiders visual memory, stereotypes, and standards between Orient and Occident. Recent and forthcoming exhibitions include Daily Memories at Kunstmuseum Magdeburg, Music Palace at Villa Empain in Brussels, Perpetually Transient at Kunstraum Riehen in Basel, Encyclonospace Iranica at Access Gallery in Vancouver, and solo exhibitions at Stadtgalerie Saarbrücken and Carbon12 Dubai. In 2014, she is awarded the Goethe-Institute Villa Kamogawa Residency in Kyoto. Additional residencies and awards include the MAK-Schindler Artists and Architects-in-Residence Program in Los Angeles and The Emdash Award from the Frieze Foundation.
