Mapping Within: An Alternative Guide to Tehran and Beyond

Mapping Within: An Alternative Guide to Tehran and Beyond is a group exhibition curated by Sohrab Kashani for The Mine in Dubai on the occasion of Art Dubai 2015. The exhibition unfolds as an alternative cartography of Tehran, a city in constant expansion yet impossible to fully contain. Rather than approaching the city through its visible routines, the participating artists engage with inner terrains that are solitary, imagined, and deeply subjective.
The works propose fragments of other geographies in which inward reflection becomes a mode of navigation, and where memory, history, and origin persist as latent presences within invented worlds. Together, these positions resist a singular narrative, opening instead multiple points of entry into Iran’s shifting cultural and social fabric.
What emerges are maps of a different order, intimate and melancholic, at times dissonant, suggesting that the familiar cannot be separated from the elusive.
The exhibition is accompanied by a benefit auction organised in collaboration with Paddle8, with part of the proceeds redirected to support Sazmanab.
Participating artists include Nasser Bakhshi, Yousha Bashir, Afshin Chizari, Marco Djermaghian, Samira Eskandarfar, Amir Nasr Kamgooyan, Myriam Quiel, Aliyar Rasti, Behnam Sadighi, and Hamed Sahihi.
Venue: The Mine [Dubai]
Dates: March 16 – April 30, 2015
