Doing stuff with people: Mark Allen and Jon Rubin

Mark Allen and Jon Rubin
Sazmanab

Mark Allen is the founder and executive director of Machine Project, a non-profit performance and installation space exploring intersections between art, technology, natural history, science, music, literature, and food. Operating from an informal storefront in the Echo Park neighbourhood of Los Angeles, Machine Project also functions as a loose collective of artists producing projects in locations ranging from beaches and parking lots to museums.

Jon Rubin is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice creates interventions in public life, reimagining individual, collective, and institutional behaviour. His projects include establishing a radio station in an abandoned neighbourhood that broadcasts only the sound of an extinct bird, running a barter-based nomadic art school, operating a restaurant that hosts a live video talk show with its customers, and co-directing another restaurant that serves cuisine exclusively from countries in conflict with the United States.

Mark Allen and Jon Rubin speak together about their respective projects and performances, methods of collaboration, and new works currently in development.
