Ala Ebtekar in conversation with Ahoo Najafian

Sazmanab artist-in-residence Ala Ebtekar speaks in conversation with Ahoo Najafian about Ebtekar’s recent exhibition at The Third Line, nowheresville \ nä-kōja,-abäd, and the themes around which the exhibition is conceived, including light, translation, and Iranian Futurism.
Ala Ebtekar was born in Berkeley in 1978 and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2002, followed by a Master of Fine Arts from Stanford University in 2006. He is a visiting lecturer in the Department of Art and Art History at Stanford University. His work has been widely exhibited internationally. Solo exhibitions include Parallax at Gallery Paule Anglim, San Francisco, Absent Arrival at Gallery Paule Anglim, Elsewhen at The Third Line, Dubai, Indelible Whispers of the Sun at Charlie James Gallery, Los Angeles, Re-emergence at Gallery Paule Anglim, 1388 at The Third Line, Dubai, Hampah at Charlie James Gallery, Los Angeles, and Emergence at Richmond Art Center, California. His works are included in public and private collections such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, Berkeley Art Museum, Deutsche Bank, the de Young Museum, and the Farjam Collection. He lives and works in California.
Ahoo Najafian is a PhD candidate in Islamic Studies in the Department of Religious Studies at Stanford University. Her research focuses on contemporary literature and visual arts in Islamicate societies, with particular attention to Iran, as well as questions of identity, authenticity, and gender.
