The Tehran/Pittsburgh YouTube Mix

Sazmanab and Waffle Shop

A live screening of videos curated by Sohrab Kashani and Jon Rubin, drawn directly from YouTube posts shot in both Tehran and Pittsburgh, was presented simultaneously at Sazmanab (Tehran) and Waffle Shop (Pittsburgh). A back-and-forth format utilised the vast and idiosyncratic resources of YouTube to present first-person video accounts reflecting everyday life in each city.

Scattered throughout YouTube are countless points of view and fragmented histories, both personal and collective. By arranging these video segments—documentaries, personal missives, old family films, newsreels, and music videos—the screening shed new light on the sociopolitical landscapes of both past and present.

The forty-minute screening was followed by a live Skype conversation between attendees in Pittsburgh and Tehran, conducted in English.

This event was originally developed by Sohrab Kashani and Jon Rubin for Red76 and The YouTube School for Social Politics.
