Presentation by Doreen Mende
Doreen Mende (b. 1976) is an author, curator, and researcher based in Berlin. In collaboration with architect Wilfried Kuehn, she co-conceived the study programme in Exhibition Design and Curatorial Practice at the University of Arts and Design in Karlsruhe (2006–2009). As part of her teaching position there, she is co-founder and chief editor of the publication series Displayer, which investigates the politics of exhibiting within specific spatial, institutional, and geopolitical contexts. The annual publication evolves from seminars, projects, and workshops by international artists including Adrian Piper, Milica Tomic, Omer Fast, Harun Farocki, Antje Ehmann, and Armin Linke.
She has curated exhibitions at independent and institutional spaces such as JET in Berlin, Kunsthalle Exnergasse in Vienna, and ZKM in Karlsruhe. A recent exhibition at Museum Morsbroich in Leverkusen, co-curated with Markus Heinzelmann, focused on differing temporalities of exhibiting through photographic projects by Candida Höfer, accompanied by an extensive publication. In 2005, Mende co-founded the project space General Public in Berlin, where she organised the screening series Screening in General with artists including Filipa César, Clemens von Wedemeyer, and Sandra Schäfer. She received her PhD from the Curatorial/Knowledge of the Visual Cultures department at Goldsmiths, University of London, in 2013, and regularly contributes to exhibition catalogues and art magazines including Von Hundert and Frieze Art Magazine.
