An evening with Hiwa K and Aneta Szylak

Sazmanab

Iraqi Kurdish artist and Sazmanab artist-in-residence Hiwa K gives a talk at Sazmanab on Tuesday, June 26, 2012. He presents a selection of projects that emerge from his reflections on the eight-year Iran–Iraq War and the Gulf War. These works unfold through informal formats and methodologies including riddles, personal storytelling, jokes, games, and music.

Through the project For A Few Socks of Marbles, realised at MUSAC in Spain, Hiwa K discusses parallels between power relations embedded in children’s marble games and his own social experiences when moving from an Arab neighbourhood to a Kurdish one. He reflects on how the vertical positioning of the Kurdish left hand when targeting contrasts with the horizontal positioning of the Arab hand, drawing a connection between bodily gesture, play, and the technologies deployed during the Gulf War.

The talk forms part of Estrangement, a long-term project developed by Hiwa K together with Polish curator Aneta Szylak, who joins the talk via Skype.

Hiwa K’s visit to Tehran is realised through a collaboration between Sazmanab and Wyspa Institute of Art in Gdańsk, Poland, and is made possible with the generous support of ifa (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen), Stuttgart.
