Sazmanab Project, Sazmanab Platform for Contemporary Arts
Sazmanab was established in 2008 by Sohrab Kashani in Tehran as an independent, non-profit, artist-run space for experimental and research-based artistic practices. It initially operated as Sazmanab Project (2008–2011) and later, following the renovation of its venue, as Sazmanab Platform for Contemporary Arts (2011–2014). Throughout this period, Sazmanab was based in Kashani’s apartment studio in northwest Tehran. The name Sazmanab is derived from “Sazman-e Ab” (Water Department), slightly altered to suggest an alternative, reconfigured institution, conceived as a system for distributing art, knowledge, and community like water.
Sazmanab Project and Sazmanab Platform for Contemporary Arts functioned as platforms for exhibitions, talks, workshops, screenings, and residencies, and developed long-term initiatives including a public library and archive, a residency programme, the Sazmanab Video Library, and Sazmanab TV. Operating outside commercial and state-driven frameworks, it emphasized collaboration, knowledge exchange, and alternative modes of production and presentation.
